From Stable Floor to Stationery Store: Learn All About Horse Poo Paper
Share
Horse poop paper?! Yes, it’s as strange and pioneering as it sounds. Turns out, horse poop? It's not just a stepping hazard at the ranch! It's the material we use to make our range of innovative sustainable products. While we primarily use elephant poop to make our products (there is more of an abundance of it in the northern Thailand area), we don’t discriminate against the animal poop that is available to us. POOPOOPAPER products can be made from elephant poo, cow poo, horse poo, and even donkey poo. But for today, we’ll tell you all about horse poop.
What is Horse Poo Paper?
Horse poop paper, alternatively called manure paper if you want to be fancy, is exactly what you think it is. It is paper made from the fibrous material taken from the excrement of a horse. Since horses have a very fibrous diet, their poop is an ideal eco-friendly alternative to traditional materials used to make paper. Back in the 18th and 19th centuries in Europe, making paper from horse poo was actually a very common practice.

Why Use Horse Poo to Make Paper?
Unlike trees, which is the material commonly used to make paper, horse poop is considered a sustainable alternative as it is a renewable resource. Horses need to eat, and as a result, horses will poop. It’s a never-ending lifehack as long as horses exist. On the other hand, it takes on average anywhere from 10 to 40 years to grow a tree. To frequently harvest wood from them to make paper is unsustainable. The benefit of using horse poop for paper production is that it won’t contribute to deforestation, which is a win for Mother Nature – making it a win for everyone.
What Does Horse Poo Paper Look Like?
Horse poop paper doesn’t look strange. It won’t have the clean, bleached white, machine-milled paper look that you’re familiar with sitting on your printer’s tray. It will be a natural-toned sheet of paper with a slightly textured and possibly rough surface. These irregularities will come from the horse dung fibers along with the other natural waste fibers it was mixed with. At POOPOOPAPER, our horse poop fibers are combined with fibers from seasonably available waste like corn husks or banana tree trunks to create a stronger and more well-bonded sheet of paper.
Our talented local artists are key in taking plain, rustic-looking horse poop paper and elevating them into our wonderful POOPOOPAPER products. Using natural soy-based inks, we can create horse poop paper in many shades. Our skillful artisans then cut shapes and combine things together to create everything from our environmentally friendly cards to our paper bookmarks, and of course, our eco-friendly notebooks.
