Donkey Poop: The Number Two Solution for Sustainable Paper
Share
While you can't polish donkey poop, did you know you can press it into paper? With their fiber-rich diet, it turns out donkeys have been producing sustainable stationery materials this whole time… They just needed us to do the paperwork! At POOPOOPAPER, we’re not afraid to get our hands dirty for the sake of the environment. Often overlooked, these gentle grazers are quietly offering one of nature’s most unexpected resources: their poop. We take that and turn it into beautiful, sustainable paper products. Confused? Here's everything you didn’t know about the world’s most underrated raw material.
First Things First: What is Donkey Poop?
Donkey poop is the natural byproduct of a donkey’s digestion. Yes, that’s our polite way of saying it's what’s left behind after their daily meal of grasses, shrubs, and fibrous plants. Unlike carnivores or even omnivores, donkeys are herbivores with highly efficient but not entirely thorough digestive systems. That means much of what they eat comes out the other end full of undigested fibers, particularly cellulose. These cellulose fibers are exactly what traditional paper is made from — usually taken from trees — but in this case, the donkeys have done the pre-processing for us… the natural way.
Why Use Donkey Poop to Make Paper?
Because why cut down a tree when a donkey’s already done half the work? Making paper from donkey poop isn’t just a novelty; it’s a smart, sustainable solution to reduce waste and deforestation. Did you know that it generally takes 17 to 24 trees to produce one ton of standard office paper? Think about how many offices exist in the world… That’s so many trees!
By doing things the POOPOOPAPER way, our process begins by collecting the poop (from happy, healthy donkeys), then thoroughly cleaning it to extract the usable fibers. These fibers are boiled in extremely high heat to kill off any bacteria, and then blended into a pulp that becomes the base for our handmade paper products. It’s a simple recycling loop that gives waste new life, all while lowering the carbon footprint of traditional paper production.

What Does Donkey Poop Paper Look Like?
It looks artisanal! Donkey poop paper doesn’t look or smell anything like its origin story might suggest. Each sheet is 100% odor-free and has a natural, textured appearance that reflects its handmade character. It’s soft yet sturdy, with flecks of fiber that give it a unique personality. However, if we process the material using our machine-milled method, it can look just like paper you’re used to seeing at the office supply. Though depending on the batch, it may carry subtle earthy tones and organic variation. In fact, if we didn’t tell you it came from donkey dung, you’d probably just assume it was artisan paper from a high-end stationery store. (You’d be half right.)
